Mike Hesson named new head coach of Pakistan’s cricket team

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly finalized the appointment of former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson as the new head coach of the national men’s cricket team. His official appointment is expected after the conclusion of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10.

Hesson, who is currently coaching Islamabad United in PSL 10, is seen as the frontrunner for the role. The PCB recently advertised the position, requiring candidates to have Level 3 coaching certification and at least 10 years of coaching experience at the domestic or international level.

With a wealth of experience, Hesson has previously served as the head coach of the New Zealand national team and as Director of Cricket for the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. He played a key role in Islamabad United’s successful PSL 9 campaign, marking his debut season in the league.

The head coach position has been vacant since Gary Kirsten stepped down, with Aaqib Javed serving as the interim coach until his contract expired in February 2025. While Saqlain Mushtaq is also being considered for the role, Hesson is currently the PCB’s preferred choice.
