ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, pledged on Sunday to revamp the country’s internet infrastructure, vowing to restore optimal internet speeds and strengthen the telecom sector’s infrastructure.
In an interview with a private news channel, Khawaja emphasised, “My ministry is leaving no stone unturned to ensure seamless continuity in the industry. The recent surge in cyber-attacks has raised our alert levels, and we are taking swift and decisive action to address these challenges and reinforce our digital defenses.”
Khawaja also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the IT and telecom industry, which she cited as a top priority.
To achieve this, the government is upgrading existing systems and focusing on key areas such as enhancing tower intensity, expanding broadband internet access, and tackling cybersecurity concerns. These efforts aim to improve coverage, boost economic growth, and create a secure online environment for citizens.
In response to a query, the minister revealed that the Ministry of Interior would instruct the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to investigate and resolve issues faced by citizens when sending videos, ensuring that internet speeds remain unaffected overall.
Khawaja also acknowledged existing challenges, but assured that the government is working diligently to address them.
She stressed that every citizen has the right to express their opinions. While digital platforms offer ample opportunities for self-expression, she added that temporary unavailability of these platforms does not hinder citizens’ freedom of speech.
